A Dauber's Progress

Hank Adlam’s third book!

Cover art: A Dauber's Progress by Hank AdlamHank is well known for his marine, aviation and landscape paintings in oil. In past years he exhibited at the Royal Ulster Academy and Christie’s, and held nine successful one-man exhibitions at museums and galleries in the west of England and South Wales. In 2011, however, he became registered as a partially-sighted person and found painting, or ‘daubin’ as he prefers to call it, difficult. He has now developed a style of painting based entirely on memories which continues to portray the lovely skies, seas and landscapes of the British Isles, but without the detail that he cannot see to do.

At the same time he has written a new book about how he came to paint, with encouragement to the reader who may wish to share in the pleasure he has derived from applying paint to canvas. There are 32 of his pictures, showing how he progressed from a child’s painting set to his current polished and attractive style.

As a naval fighter pilot Hank operated from Carriers in the Atlantic, Arctic, Mediterranean and Pacific theatres of WW2. His paintings reflect his feelings about sea and sky, which were his theatres of war, and his love of the natural landscape of his homeland.

At the age of 86 he successfully published his first autobiographical volume, On and Off the Flight Deck (available from Pen & Sword), and followed this with the second volume, Life is a Yo-Yo, published by Arrowsmith in 2007. A Dauber’s Progress is published to celebrate Hank’s 90th birthday in 2012.
